Setting A Hot EXAMPLE

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Last week team PrettyGreen spent the day with upcoming electro-pop chart topper (and Nandos obsessive) EXAMPLE going to four of our favourite Peri-Peri chicken restaurants in London for special acoustic renditions of tracks off his new album ‘Won’t Go Quietly’ – The Peri Go Round.

Each of the stops were packed to the rafters with queues out the door and fans chanting along to tunes while helping themselves to the free food on offer.  As the most easily bribed member of team PrettyGreen, Pistol Pete played the important role of Nando’s cheery chicken mascot ‘Barcy’.  Climbing into the 7 foot, well-insulated furry costumes in the heigh of the British summer heat, he set off into the hoards of partying fans.  Returning three hours later a lot warmer but none the less cheerful, he ranked the new mascot training regime of “killer moves dressed as poultry” the best and most entertaining since Mr Motivator donned his lycra all-in-one and had us all dancing around our living rooms on Saturday mornings.. Oh, just us then?

Good work Pete, all done in the line of duty, he’s now earned the right to pass the suit on for the continued game of Peri Go Round.

Picture 16Another day, another besotted Nando’s fan who will literally go to extreme lengths to demonstrate their love of the Peri-Peri excellence. Next week EXAMPLE, currently at No.2 in the midweeks with his single ‘Kickstarts’ will be heading to four Nando’s stores for a whole new kind of showcase – one that doesn’t involve A&Rs scratching their chins or freeloading industry types after free beer.

This showcase will take place between 2pm – 6pm for everyone and anyone who fancies popping along for an acoustic rendition of his latest album ‘Won’t Go Quietly’.

All you’ll need is a secret password which Example will be giving out on Twitter next week…. @exampleyoutwit

A Wapping Week

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

So we thought that with mid term break for RBMA that it might be a little calmer in the office. Oh how wrong we were!

We launched the 1st part of our Trident Perpetual Festival promotion on Tuesday with George Lamb, Rob Da Bank and  Steve from Virtual Festivals.

It was a tough brief following the success of the Beyonce campaign (100 single ladies is still doing over 100k views a week). Made tougher by a brilliant briefing from the Client.

As one particular Client of Strings used to say “it’s all about lose briefs”. Partly, it’s also about creative ambition and the ability to allow great ideas to actually see the light of day. Which was what the Client wanted.

Ourselves, RPM and PHD have worked as a really close virtual team to pull this one off from the initial briefing. And what’s been really refreshing has been the collaboration between all parties. The original concept for Tridents Perpetual Festival might have been PrettyGreens (think Claire’s trying to actually own this one), the reality is that it’s the integration of the 3 Agencies, often working without the Client that has delivered this promotion.

We couldn’t have made it happen without RPM’s on-pack and digital skills (or Di’s spreadsheet management) or without PHD’s media approach, by working together, demarcating our own roles, we’ve worked much more effectively.

So we’ve 2 weeks to go before we close the 1st phase (30 Festivals, 30 Weeks, £30k) and then we’re in to shorlisting and assessment centres. We’ve already got 2k applications so it’s going to be fun, but the planning for the interviews is nearly finalised. It’s tough not to become quite sadistic, we think it’s Wipeout, Big Brother and The Apprentice that make you think that way.

On the same day we were also helping develop a bigger plan for Nandos Xperimental, which always causes a heated debate, which shows how much everyone cares. What’s exciting is that after months of planning, we think we’ve found the solution.

Lipsticks and chocolate are still a plenty in the office and we’ve got a great event in the pipeline we’re just trying to finalise. More to follow…..

We’re also on the Easter Egg hunt trail, which is a great new project we’re working on, plus we’ve got a couple of really exciting new business opportunities that we’re close to being able to reveal (we’ll know more by Friday).

And on Thursday a group headed out to the Wapping Project for a late lunch (a very late Christmas lunch party). An nightmare to get to, but what an amazing space/ restaurant/ gallery. The downstairs gallery somewhat scary as it got dark, but gets our vote as one of London’s most interesting venues.

A fun time was had by all, but it did feel at times like we thought that the prohibition was about to start as we tried to drink Shoreditch dry after the Wapping Project. Some very very sore heads on Friday (Folu didn’t make it in to the office at all, ok he did eventually in body, but that was about it). Ravi did a brilliant 2 hour conference call, whilst having lunch which was entertaining to watch (not sure Lisa dialing in from LA would have been too impressed).

Luckily Emma’s back from New York next week so Strings won’t be able to drag people off to the pub so easily. That said we’re up for another Award on Thursday as Best Newcomer with the MCCA, so more Top Trumps and drinking to follow.

Sealed With A Loving Kick

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Picture the scene.

He opens the door, walks in and the missus is standing there arms crossed with a face like thunder. Is it her birthday? Did he tread in something?! Has she seen Marilyn’s Massage Parlour on his credit card statement?! The answer to all of these of course is a resounding “no,” (unless your name is John Terry or Avram Grant) The reason he’ll be sleeping on the couch tonight is he’s forgotten the most romantic day of the year… Valentine’s Day.

Whilst the alpha-idiots try and re-assure themselves (year-on-year that) “she doesn’t want a present, she isn’t like that” or “it’s just a Hallmark holiday,” the fact of the matter remains, he’s in BIG trouble.

So this year, we felt it was about time that the saviour wasn’t at a slap-inducing bunch of weeds from the BP forecourt, but an uber-handy Valentine’s SOS package from Nando’s that is less ‘in the doghouse’ and more ‘give the dog a bone.’

All he has to do is head to one of the selected Nando’s, armed with the password from the blog and he’ll be given a free card, rose and other X-rated goodies that will put the smile firmly back on her face.

It’s as easy as 1,2,3 and  he’ll end up looking as smooth as a cashmere codpiece.

Now is it a coincidence that Nick (with some help from Hamish) were behind this promotion and that Kate and Claire have been invited to a special “hot” night out on Sunday (Peri Peri sauce anyone)

The next thing the guys have to worry about is her birthday… (now come on Keri, help them out, give them the brief).

Spice up your life

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

iStock_000007560426XSmallThis week we are getting everyone to crank up the heat, no we are not talking central heating (although we’re not loving the new British Gas campaign) – it’s National Chilli Week and our lovely friends at Nando’s have just revealed that 98% of us Brits are now adding spice to our food on a regular basis. Great news for the spicy chicken legends.

But we can think of more reasons to jump on the chilli trend than just a feisty feast as this cheeky little number is also known for its aphrodisiac qualities, an extra little kick under the covers this winter is certainly worth taking the heat for.

We’re also hearing rumours of a game of Chili Russian Roulette that’s being planned, as we get more details we’ll post it through, but it sounds like fun.

PRCA Awards Top Trumps Game

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

tt1Whenever you’re shortlisted for an Award everyone always asks the inevitable “so what are your chances”.

Well it’s always difficult to turn it into an inexact science and it’s always Head vs Heart and all that, but naturally we’ve been weighing up our chances in the PRCA Awards.

We’re up against Threepipe, in Small Agency of the Year Category. Not bad, 50:50 chance at 1st glance, but if we were playing  Top Trumps, it looks like PrettyGreen are a Ford Mondeo and Threepipe are a brand spanking new Bugatti Veyron (that’s $1.8m 0-60 before you blink versus £50 and free breakdown recovery)

Here’s actually how it throws down on paper……..

PRCA Small Agency of the Year  – Top Trumps

Name:                         PrettyGreen                     threepipe
Name inspiration:        Sound Affects             Smoking 3 huge pipes
Born:                              4th July 2008                   2004

Best Staff Name               Coco                               Nia

That said, it’s not about the size of the roar in the car, it’s the size of the car in the dog (or something like that). Anyway, we know we’ve had a blinder of a year as have threepipe. Last November there were 3 of us, and we had just been awarded the total Comms business for Red Bull. A year on here we are, we haven’t lost a PR pitch,  work with amazing Clients and been part of the team nailing some brilliant projects. Our Top Trumps (in no particular order) being:-

  1. Helping Robbie Maddison backflip Tower Bridge with Red Bull
  2. Powering Up Battersea Power Station for Red Bull X-fighters
  3. Strutting our stuff on Red Bull Fashion Factory during LFW
  4. Unwrapping 100 single ladies and playing a giant game of musical chairs all across London for Trident and Beyonce
  5. Getting a skateboarding chicken doing tricks with  Nando’s X-perimental skatejam
  6. Doing a Wrappers Delight for Nando’s
  7. Launching The Kitchen and the Valentines special on London Tonight
  8. Working with Fallon and PHD for the last year on Cadbury 2012
  9. Creating a new spirits brand with Sven from Metropolitan Spirits
  10. Making people Feel Good with Macmillan and the Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning

Strings was actually one of the PRCA judges (although he wasn’t allowed to vote for PrettyGreen but tried, numerous times) and we know we’re up against the best in the industry but given how early we our in our life-stage we’re really chuffed to be shortlisted against threepipe.  So we’ll be raising a glass or two to everyone nominated, every winner and we’ll be smoking 3 big cigars at the back of the room – Good luck to Jim, Eddie and the rest of the team.

So we might currently look like we’re driving a Mondeo, but really we’re driving something far better  – Our own rock and roll tour bus! And it’s exciting to be at the beginning of our journey. It sometimes feels like we’re on the edge of a cliff like the Italian Job and other times as though we’ve got the Osbourne’s on-board, but it’s fun and there’s plenty more seats.

Hot Young Talent for Nando’s

Friday, October 30th, 2009

In camp Nando’s things are really Heating up on the celebrity front.  It’s amazing the reaction that a  feast on the famous fiery chicken dishes gets.  This week as the competition is rising, so are the taste buds in the X-Factor house as the singing sensations have been continuously spotted in their local branch.

All for the love of chicken…  Tinchy Stryder is again tweeting his love for it while Ricky Whittle is certainly spicing up his performance on it…..Nando’s chicken is so hot at the moment the PrettyGreen team are going to set up a Nando’s Hot-Line.

We will keep you updated on our weekly spots and celebrity fans  – High 5 card anyone?

It’s A Pretty Mad House

Friday, October 9th, 2009

We’ve had two more cases of the dreaded swine flu, not sure if this is the milder cases, as it’s absolutely floored poor Hamish and Claire. We’re not sure how they caught it, hanging around in the countryside together probably, although Claire swears blind the culprits, the 452 bus to Ladroke Grove that’s a breeding ground for tropical diseases, many that haven’t yet be cataloged by St Mary’s Tropical Disease Centre.

Sian’s jetted off to the tropics, to try and bring back more strange bugs, but we’re not sure lying on a beach for 10 days counts as “medical science”, Nick’s jetted off to Leeds for a week of R&R (think Leeds and R&R is a contradiction) and Lisa’s been back from LA, but actually been out, more than she’s in with various International jet-setting projects, but she has just confirmed her photography course, which she’s really excited about.

We also haven’t actually properly announced the arrival of Lucy, who’s heading up our 2012 offering. After heading up Adidas at H&K it’s great to have a sporting guru amongst us (although we’re a bit worried as she sits next to Sian who’s a mad Spinning fanatic and we reckon between them they’ll have us all doing 15 minute step classes before each meeting).

We’ve also got our 1st Intern on-board, Hannah. Very lovely and very hard working. Nice to have her on-board and next week sees Folu join us to work across a number of projects, helping drive our digital offering already nicknamed ‘chief seeder’.

We’ll be happy if we’d have thought of this. Simple, yet genius. 100 Best Youtube Clips in 4 minutes. 2.5m views in a week.

We got the photo’s back from Tom Oldham, he has the unbelievable knack to make us all look vaguely human and actually quite good. Think it’s the way he puts everyone at ease. He gave Nick a big man hug to cheer him up as he was in such a bad mood, so Tom gave him a bear hug, which seemed to do the trick. As we’re growing quite quickly it looks like Tom’s going to have to come back next week to do more shots.

We’ve also been busy with our secret spirit brand with Sven, who we’re lucky to still have with us, as his plane had 3 abortive attempts at landing last week as it tried to land in a tropical storm in Taipei (glad you made it Sven). We’re quite close to revealing more as we’ve had trade-mark approval on the brand name, and John and Chris those design legends from DF are just readying the artwork to go to print on the bottle. Needless to say we’re very excited about the actual brew, “smooth, complex, refreshing, traditional, refined for a more modern” etc etc. and the distillery goes into full production in about a months time. We’re hoping to have sample bottles and product around the same time. It’s going to be a lively Christmas!!!

Picture 1It was lovely to see Paul Bonhemme win the Air Race World Championship last weekend in Barcelona, thoroughly deserved. We’ve also been having a lot of fun with new TV series Red Bull Rivals. Some great wipeouts!!!!. And of course we’ve got the new Energy Shots to play with.

Mandy’s been out eating a lot of desserts for Nando’s (yes we get paid for taking new desserts to media etc and eating them with them, not sure how we get away with that, they do rock though).

Jess and Mike have been working like little beavers trying to deliver a new sampling and experiential campaign for a new Client, for November. And as part of ensuring our brainstorms are kept creative Jess went out and bought some footballs (not sure quite what we’re meant to do with them), but had a lot of fun round the office. Current game is to try and get them in the the recycling bin launched from any place in the office (rule is any breakages you need to pay). It’s a bit disconcerting when suddenly a ball flies past your ear, even more so for Coco who sits with her back to the bin.

Strings was playing Lame to Fame again, as he was having a meeting at Soho Hotel (top secret new team talks!!!) but it became somewhat distracted by the fact that the boys from X Factor were all being filmed with Peter Andre. It caused lots of debate in the office. Claire hates afro man, Graham hates the twins, Mandy thought they were all quite ‘fit”, Strings didn’t know what any of them were called, but was amused to see the twins asking Peter to sign their shirt as he left etc etc

Anyway nearly the weekend, Monday might see everyone in the office at the same time, which will be a 1st for Clerkenwell.

SK8J London507

This weekend, the Pretty Greeners were at the last stop of the Nando’s Xperimental Skate Jam at London’s BaySixty6. After the success of Leeds and Leicester last weekend in which over 500 kids turned up to learn how to skateboard and meet some of the UK’s top Pros, by 10 o’clock the streets of West London were lined with the skateboarding yoof ready to tear it up.

The BBC’s Mark Bright was at BaySixty6 the night before to do a special feature on the London News and our resident skateboarder Hamo took this opportunity to perform a trick in front of weather-girl Wendy Hurrell (and the whole of TV-watching London!) As you can see from the video, this turned out to be the weather’s biggest blunder since Michael Fish’s infamous 1987 broadcast….

SK8J London307

Click on “Hamish it wasn’t me I wasn’t wearing that coloured top” (click again on the still, it’s right at the end when the Beeb do their weather round up from Nando’s Skate Jam, he’s the one under the weather map crawling on his hands and knees).

The event itself was a huge success and with hundreds of kids at the event and DJ Example pumping out the tunes, the atmosphere was absolutely electric. The Nando’s Peri-Peri BBQ chicken went down a storm as kids needed refueling for the afternoon of competitions, and we needed refueling to keep our energy levels on par with the youngsters – we’re not as young as we used to be!

SK8J London105

To top off a high-energy day, Nando’s carried out the legendary throw-out from the half-pipe giving away limited-edition skateboard decks and t-shirts to ensure everyone went home with a smile whether they can kick-flip or not… we hadn’t quite mastered it, so we’re already signed up for next year!

I Don’t Get It

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Monday started quietly for most of the Green House after a weekend skateboarding (not skating as Coco was quite rightly corrected on) and Red Bull Fashion Factory, but the temperature and animation quickly increased when we started discussing what people watched over the weekend – And no it wasn’t Strictly v X Factor, it was Cadbury and Fallons latest offering for Dairy Milk and Fair Trade.

As you’d expect the class was divided, and the comments raged from genius to rubbish. The over-riding thought was it’s a really fresh and smart way to talk about a very dry and quite uninteresting topic and the songs really great (and yes Sian we know it’s an important topic that we all need to take more interest in, along with trying to work out how to recycle our office food waste, which doesn’t involve maggots in the office).

Judy Blame at the Red Bull Fashion FactoryThe other area was whether or not wearing knickers on your head at a fashion party was a fashion statement or a cry for help. Either way caused a lot of amusing debate.

This week we’re flat out planning for Nando’s Skate Jam in London on Saturday, the launch of The Kitchen’s new London delivery service, a new campaign for Trident, Strings is a judge on an Awards panel so lots of serious chin scratching, and trying to recruit some serious Digital people,  but most importantly we’re planning our Macmillan Coffee Morning for Friday.

The arguments that are raging over what cakes should be made and whether or not anyone had a big flask. Basically we’re off to The Serpentine where we’re going to hire row boats, tie them together and have a very civilised coffee morning on the lake, (that’s the plan, although we’ve just found out Mandy’s not a great swimmer and we think Hamish has a plan to turn her into a swamp monster). If you fancy joining us, we’ll be on the lake from 10am tied together in the middle.

We’re also quite happy that Robin survived his terrible accident, thanks for the emails of concern. Basically he smashed into Claire’s window. Why, who knows? But after about an hour you’ll be pleased to know he recovered enough to fly off!!!!!
