Dough – Extra Fruit Topping Sir

Friday, February 27th, 2009

manueluribeworldfatestmanSo, Dominoes Pizza and Sky have been reprimanded by Ofcom for their broadcast sponsorship of the Simpsons? Well, well, well. When this story landed in Monday’s newspapers, it was almost as amusing as the show itself.

Now, with British children looking more and more weeble-like each year, it is inevitable that the Dominoes / Simpsons alliance would be questioned. For a number of years now, there has been great concern at fast-food adverts being indiscriminately muddled between children’s television programmes and here we all are, welcoming this dysfunctional American family into our living rooms at the same time every evening, with pizza adverts in tow.

But, and this is a big fact but, what must be remembered is the context of the sponsorship. Whilst concerns are raised about the pizzas our children are potentially salivating over in the advert buffers, are we forgetting about the more pressing issues? Perhaps we fail to recognise that our kids are also being taught how make a deep fried bacon sandwich using blocks of butter as bread by a morbidly obese man who has had no less that 3 triple heart by-passes in his 40 years!?

Or are we perhaps overlooking the fact that this father-figure, Homer J. Simpson, spends his free-time (and most of his working-day) vegetating in his Y-fronts drinking endless amounts of Duff Beer until he is well and truly sozzled? Either way, in comparison, the cheese and tomato toppings on Dominoes pizza become somewhat less threatening and start to resemble a good source of calcium and vitamin C… perhaps.

This ludicrous ruling against Dominoes and Sky is marketing-correctness gone mad. Ofcom need to realise that if they do find themselves watching a programme about a lazy, American, blue-collar, working-class family who like to wolf their dinners down in front of the TV with minimal conversation, they can’t expect to be targeted for the Government’s Change4Life campaign.

Right, we’re all off to buy a pizza, The Simpsons starts in 5 minutes…

Loving Life?

valentines roses

Thank you

Valentines Day is a big celebration for the Agency, as it was actually the day when a business marriage ended that became the catalyst for Pretty Green. Like all relationships when they end they have a tendency to get quite heated and if you’re not careful it’s always easy to focus too much on the negative’s. Therefore we’d like to say thank you with flowers, we wouldn’t have happened without you, and we wouldn’t have found the new loves of our life.

Valentines Day (weekend) is also one of those days where you think about loved ones around you and what it would be like if they weren’t around. Unless you’re totally inhuman you can’t help think about what Jade Gooding’s going through, and about the reality of what she’s facing up to, with her young children.

It’s going to interesting to see how Mr Clifford goes about handling the media frenzy for access to her final few months and whether the media respect her privacy (regardless of how much she sells some of it to a few media partners) . We may see a few new firsts for access TV in her dying hours, and lots of debates about the rights and wrongs. I suppose if it helps more people think about both the social impact of cancer and it helps secure the financial security of her family then maybe it’s not a bad thing.

Prevention Vs Cure, always a strong debate in Govt circles, and Strings spent Friday discussing the impact of Speeding with Gov’t officials. Now if truth be told he didn’t actually have a choice as to whether or not he was going to attend.

The MCCA Award nominations were announced last week and it’s interesting to see who’s doing what, and where the people are who you thought were going to do well following last years successes aren’t featured. Hopefully we’ll be in a position to throw our hat into the ring next year.

We had a great fun this week with The Kitchen, Sam Mann from Capital radio came down to create a Valentines meal for Lucio  and ITV London Tonight did a feature on The Kitchen around credit crunch London. Not bad considering it was the same week that Jamie Oliver launched Recipease.

New Year New Client

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

It’s always a hard landing the first week back after Christmas, but it was made a lot easier with the fact that we picked up a new Client. We can’t really talk about it, but a great addition to Pretty Green, and we’re really excited about the project.

We also had Thierry from The Kitchen on the Market Kitchen last week, cooking a very simple ham hock macaroni cheese, and trying to convince Caprice that sardines are great (1 out of 2’s not bad), and we’re having conversations with quite a big brand about doing a large partnership, which could be interesting.

Also quite a sad week, one of our long standing Clients, and someone Strings has worked with for years at both Stella Artois and Red Bull has moved overseas, which is a little sad, but it does mean we’ve got a great place in the sun for trips abroad.

The main topic of debate in the office last week, was whether or not it really was as cold as people kept telling us, or whether it was just the standard British trait to talk about it. Virtually every person we met would start the conversation by saying “it’s so cold”, which for Emma it was as she’d just got back from holidaying in the sun, but there was no sympathy from anyone in the office. Especially as she made everyone else look like they really were ill, even if they weren’t.

We’re On The Move

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

We’ve been working our socks off on a number of new projects, including a rather interesting overseas football project with those nice guys at Threshold, and we’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to create some new brand platforms for two beer brands. We’ve found intense sampling, (obviously responsibly) helps. We had an interesting meeting about a new film in production about Glastonbury which looks like it could be fun and The Kitchen is just going great guns.

Lovely Emma went and finally got engaged to Ben, which was great news, and made all our weekends when the text arrived. Not a surprise given that they’re so great together and he’d whisked her off to Paris for the weekend. It did mean that we had to go out and celebrate (rumour has it Ben slept with a bucket next to his bed which was probably caused by all those sambuca’s)

It’s also all change at the ranch, as we’ve outgrown our current space, and currently trying to find a new office (that’s easy to get to, central, local, close to clients, etc etc). We’ve found a couple we like, it’s now just about finalising the details, but if anyone’s looking for a some tenants, drop us a line.

It’s looking pretty

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

If you are sat reading this, then hopefully you have already heard about the exciting launch of our new brand communications agency Pretty Green (or were you actually trying to download the Paul Weller song and are now slightly confused?) Either way, hello. It has been a roller-coaster couple of months, but Pretty Green officially opened its doors for business on 4 July and we are all very excited.

We have been busy bees over the last couple of weeks with some really exciting briefs for some fantastic brands such as Red Bull and The Kitchen (basically like having a mini Michelin Star Chef in your apron pocket) and have been doing a number of other top secret projects we’re not allowed to talk about and talking to lots of other interesting people every day about some really inspiring projects (watch this space)…we like our jobs.
